The Original Black
The Original Black Beauty® Abrasives
Harsco, formerly Reed Minerals, is the largest U.S. manufacturer of coal slag abrasives for the surface preparation market. Our BLACK BEAUTY® abrasives are the original, low dusting, low free silica coal slag blasting abrasives. We lead the industry for quality, value and performance.
BLACK BEAUTY® abrasives are available nationwide on three industry standard grades, as well as Elite product gradations. We will preblend them with Blastox® or Dustnet® on request.
Used for general purpose repair and maintenance blasting, including removal of paint, rust, mill scale and other coatings from surfaces. Minimum suggested nozzle size of 1/4" and, under standard blasting conditions, will achieve a 3.0-4.8 Mil profile.
Utilized for new construction, light paint and rust removal and special maintenance applications requiring reduced profiles. Minimum suggested nozzle size of 3/16” and, under standard blasting conditions, will achieve a 2.0-3.5 Mil profile.
Applicable for light blasting requiring a clean surface and minimum anchor profile, including brush-off blast or high-pressure water blast systems. Minimum suggested nozzle size of 1/8” and, under standard blasting conditions, will achieve a 1.0-2.6 Mil profile.
If your project requires a specialized or superior blasting abrasive, we can help. Using our proprietary processes and superior blending capabilities, we can fine-tune your BLACK BEAUTY® blasting media to Elite gradations. Contact us to discuss your needs.

BLACK BEAUTY® blasting abrasives are a preferred alternative to silica sand. Silica sand can contain up to 99% free silica which has been found to cause silicosis, a sometimes fatal lung disease. BLACK BEAUTY® abrasives are low dusting, chemically inert, contain less than 0.1% free silica and are not causally linked with any diseases, including silicosis.
SAND BLASTING AND SILICOSIS
Workers engaged in sand blasting receive heavy exposure to free silica. Government studies show that even short-term exposure to large amounts of free silica can cause acute silicosis, a disabling, nonreversible and sometimes even fatal lung disease. Inhaling free silica particles is also associated with bronchitis and tuberculosis. Since 1974, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that silica sand (or other substances containing more than 1% free silica) be prohibited as an abrasive blasting material and that less hazardous substitutes be used.
Because we obtain our BLACK BEAUTY® abrasive raw materials from stringent sources as approved and tested by our Technology Center, they meet environmental standards, including the most stringent abrasive specifications in the market. BLACK BEAUTY® passes California Title 17 for low dusting (CARB) (select plants), SSPC AB-1, 40CFR 261.24a (TCLP) and is also military QPL approved at select plants: MIL-A-22262B(SH).
